World Radiography Day 2006

Hospital departments all over the UK celebrated the 2006 World Radiography Day which was sponsored by Philips. Here are just some of the highlights from last year's event.

St Johns Hospital, Livingston

Radiographers at St Johns Hospital arranged a display in the main reception area of their department to attract the attention of all visitors and staff. On show were photos of all the imaging modalities used in the department.

Royal Marsden Hospital, Surrey

Therapeutic and diagnostic radiographers from Royal Marsden Hospital celebrated both arms of the profession with a stand in the hospital outpatients area. As well as display boards showing images of all the aspects of both disciplines, there was an animated slide show, a fun quiz for the general public and leaflets about radiography as a career.

Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham

Staff at Queens Medical Centre chatted with patients and relatives to gain recognition for radiographers.

Annie Smith said: “We handed out leaflets, displayed posters and stickered every man, woman and child in our midst. The furry parrots adorned the shoulders of many radiographers as they carried out their duties!”

The Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital, Belfast

The Cancer Centre used WRD 2006 as an opportunity to promote their new site, their department, the profession and radiography as a career.

Poster presentations were displayed in front reception and treatment waiting rooms and radiotherapy students assisted in giving power point presentations to staff, patients and visitors. The presentations demonstrated how much therapeutic radiography has broken down professional boundaries whilst retaining core skills and how role development has been embraced by radiographers at the cancer centre. The displays were well received by staff and visitors alike.

Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow

Roseanne Devlin, the CPD representative at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, organised an open afternoon for staff and visitors to celebrate WRD. There were displays from all of the modalities including the DR system, Dexa scanning, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CT, MRI and the Cardiac Catheter Lab. Visitors were encouraged to try on the lead protection, sample the CT oral contrast or lie down on an MRI table to experience the different exams in the department. Staff also organised a raffle which raised £822 for the local children’s hospice.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead

Radiography careers information and photo storyboards showing imaging techniques were amongst the displays at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital WRD 2006 celebrations. Another popular part of the day was the ‘MRI chocolate quiz’, which received over 70 entries. The winner was staff nurse Nicola Hope who won at coffee maker donated by Philips.
